43 people have been injured and one was killed in a failed special
forces raid in Kyrgyzstan on the house of ex-President Almazbek
Atambayev. Get the latest details in our LIVE COVERAGE.
Special forces began assaulting the house around 8pm Wednesday in an attempt to detain Atambayev, who is accused of several crimes including corruption. (Atambayev says the charges were concocted for political reasons.) Numerous shots were fired during the raid, and according to the Ministry of Health 43 people were injured and a special forces soldier was killed. Six Kyrgyz special forces soldiers have reportedly been taken hostage inside Atambayev’s house by the ex-president’s supporters. The house is located in Koi-Tash (also called “Koy Tash”), around 10 miles south of the Kyrgyzstan capital Bishek.
