• The US Department of Justice Antitrust Division has been on a hiring spree amid investigations into Silicon Valley tech giants, according to Reuters, citing two DOJ officials with knowledge of the matter.
• The Iranian city of Mahshahr saw Caspian Airlines commercial jet carrying 135 people skidding off a runway before coming to a stop on a busy highway. Miraculously, no one was killed or seriously injured, and all passengers and crew disembarked as the plane remained on its belly in the middle of vehicle traffic, with the aircraft itself appearing relatively undamaged.
• Japanese authorities said Tuesday a man with no recent travel to China has contracted the novel strain of coronavirus – apparently after driving tourists visiting from Wuhan, where a deadly outbreak began. The man ifrom Nara in western Japan drove two groups of Wuhan tourists earlier in January and was hospitalised on Saturday with flu-like symptoms.
• Authorities in the Kazakhstan capital of Nur-Sultan have declared a state of emergency after a week-long winter storm continues to pummel the city with strong winds and heavy snow.
• A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck in the strait between Jamaica and Cuba on Tuesday afternoon. A tsunami warning was issued for Jamaica, Cuba, Belize, Honduras and the Cayman Islands, but that threat has now passed.
• Australian officials on Tuesday warned the country’s central and eastern states to brace themselves for increased temperatures and strong winds in the next week, following more than a week of cooler and damper weather in Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland.
• Helocopter crash: there are indications that the helicopter plunged some 1,000 feet (305 metres). It was flying at about 184mph (296kph) and descending at a rate of more than 4,000 feet per minute when it struck the ground, according to data from Flightradar24. The pilot, Ara Zobayan, was chief pilot for the craft’s owner, Island Express Helicopters. He also was a flight instructor, had more than 8,000 hours of flight time and had flown Bryant and other celebrities several times before.

• Two children, aged eight and five, have been left by their father at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo airport, the boys arrived in Moscow with their father from Khabarovsk. They have a backpack and documents, including birth certificates and a note from the father. The children were provided with meals and handed over to the police.
• The death toll from the powerful earthquake in eastern Turkey has risen to 38, Turkey’s Directorate of Disaster and Emergency said on Sunday.
• About 5 million residents left Wuhan before the lockdown because of the deadly coronavirus epidemic and the Spring Festival holiday. There were about 9 million people remaining in the city after the lockdown.
• Hong Kong police fired tear gas in Mong Kok for the second night in a row, after a number of skirmishes between officers and anti-government protesters.
• The worse outbreak of desert locusts in seventy years is ravaging East Africa, specifically Kenya, as hundreds of millions have swarmed in from Somolia and Ethiopia. The invading locusts are “deadly” in the sense that these ‘mega-swarms’ devour crops at incredibly rapid pace and is threatening to devastate communities and a region already long struggling with food security.

• The Wuhan coronavirus outbreak will impact Singapore’s economy, with tourism-related sectors being of “immediate concern,” said Minister for Trade and Industry. These include hospitality-related companies such as hotels and travel agents, and sectors such as F&B, retail and transport, he said.

• Prince Andrew has not responded to requests from federal prosecutors and the FBI for an interview about his contacts with Jeffrey Epstein, the top federal prosecutor in Manhattan said in a press conference on Monday.

Doctors in Wuhan have been among those calling for health officials to be held to account and, in an unusually blunt statement on social media platform Weibo, a senior reporter from the province’s official Communist Party newspaper, Hubei Daily, said the city’s leaders should be removed “immediately”.
• The Indonesian National Police in a joint press conference with Interpol earlier today announced the arrest of three Magecart-style Indonesian hackers who had compromised hundreds of international e-commerce websites and stolen payment card details of their online shoppers. Though Indonesian police claim these hackers had compromised 12 e-commerce websites, experts believe the same group is behind the credit card theft at more than 571 online stores.

• The Impossible Burger is a plant-based burger, key ingredient a protein called soy leghemoglobin (SLH), derived from genetically modified (GM) yeast. A rat feeding study commissioned by the manufacturer Impossible Foods found that rats fed SLH developed unexplained changes in weight gain, changes in the blood that can indicate the onset of inflammation or kidney disease, and possible signs of anemia. Impossible Foods dismissed these statistically significant effects as “non-adverse” or as having “no toxicological relevance”. The company’s conclusion of safety is unsound, due to the short duration of the feeding study and the small number of animals used. Only a longer-term study with a larger number of animals can clarify the significance of the worrying effects seen. A nonprofit group is collecting data from people who believe they have had an adverse reaction to the burger.
