- Cracking global supply chains are fast emerging at major Chinese ports with thousands of containers of frozen meat piling up with nowhere to go. Containers of frozen pork, chicken, and beef (mostly from South America, Europe, and the US) are piling up at Tianjin, Shanghai, and Ningbo ports because of the lack of truck drivers and many transportation networks remain closed.
- Tonga’s swimming and weightlifting teams arrived in London this morning (Tongan time) after being stranded in China since 28 January, due to travel restrictions imposed following the novel coronavirus outbreak.
- Cambodian police have detained a Japanese man after he was allegedly found to be in possession of more than 1 kilogram of a stimulant drug, a customs official said. Shunichi Nonaka, 71, of Tokyo, was detained at 10 p.m. Saturday at Phnom Penh International Airport for possession of a suspicious drug that turned out to be 1.7 kg of methamphetamine. Nonaka was headed to Japan via Seoul when he was stopped.
- A total of 6,000 surgical masks have been lost at a hospital in Kobe, it was learned Tuesday. The Hyogo Prefectural Police is investigating the incident as a case of theft. The masks, worth ¥40,000, had been kept at a machine room on the third floor of the Japanese Red Cross Kobe Hospital, officials at the institution said.
- When a Chinese government mass detention campaign engulfed Memtimin Emer’s native Xinjiang region three years ago, the elderly Uighur imam was swept up and locked away, along with three of his sons. Now, a leaked database exposes in extraordinary detail the main reasons for the detentions of Emer, his three sons, and hundreds of others in their neighborhood: Their religion and their family ties. The database profiles the internment of 311 individuals with relatives abroad in Karakax County, and lists information on more than 2,000 of their relatives, neighbors and friends. Each entry includes the detainee’s name, address, national identity number, detention date and location, along with a dossier on their family, religious and community background, the reason for detention, and a decision on whether to release them. Taken as a whole, the database offers the fullest view yet into how Chinese officials decided who to put into and let out of detention camps, as part of a crackdown that has locked away more than a million ethnic minorities, most of them Muslims.
- In a new letter addressed to the Islamic Republic authorities the international soccer body FIFA says Iranian women have to be allowed to enter all football stadiums across the country to watch men’s matches.
- The final Chinese shipping containers that left port before the news of the outbreak broke are about to hit US ports.
- The Baltic Dry Index, which measures shipping activity for dry goods — meaning oil is not in the index — it is down 60 percent in 2020.
- At least seven people were on Sunday burned to death after a truck and van collided turning the van into a fireball. The incident took place on the Agra Lucknow expressway, in Unnao in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. “One of the tyres of the van burst resulting in the van going on to the wrong side of the road and colliding with the truck. The vehicle caught fire resulting in the death of seven people inside it.”
- “China has entered a different time,” said Gu Su, a professor of philosophy and law at Nanjing University. “Covering positive stories while withholding the cruel facts won’t work as people can still access information from elsewhere. The propaganda department needs to reflect upon its approach.”

- India is developing into an open-market economy from its previous autarchic policies, US-based think tank World Population Review concludes in a report.
“India’s economy is the fifth largest in the world, with a GDP of $2.94 trillion, overtaking the UK and France in 2019 to take the fifth spot,” said the report, as quoted by the Press Trust of India. To compare, the size of the UK economy is $2.83 trillion, while the French economy is $2.71 trillion. - A new report published by cybersecurity researchers has unveiled evidence of Iranian state-sponsored hackers targeting dozens of companies and organizations in Israel and around the world over the past three years. Dubbed “Fox Kitten,” the cyber-espionage campaign is said to have been directed at companies from the IT, telecommunication, oil and gas, aviation, government, and security sectors.
