A POWERFUL volcano rocked the community of New Zealand and took the lives of at least five people after it erupted on Monday. But what other volcanoes are erupting right now?
On Monday, December 9, White Island erupted at around 2.11pm local time (1.11am GMT), sending a thick plum of ash and smoke into the air.
White Island, also known as Whakaari, is the country’s most active volcano.
Despite that, the privately owned island is a popular tourist destination for frequent day visitors and scenic flights are available.
Police Deputy Commissioner John Tims said 23 people had been taken from White Island in the country’s Bay of Plenty, some of whom are injured.
