July 4th represents the United States 250th birthday.

However, the middle class is feeling the heat from a failing medium of exchange that gets constantly debased.

The things around you keep getting more expensive while your wages struggle to keep pace. The world feels the effect of exported inflation, as the dollar’s dominance lets America print and spend, pushing the pain of devaluation onto trading partners and emerging markets.

Constitutional money left over 50 years ago.

In 1971, under the Nixon Shock, the U.S. closed the gold window, ending the last remnants of dollar convertibility to gold and ushering in the pure fiat era we live in today.

What was once anchored to something real became backed by nothing but promises, endless debt, and the “full faith and credit” of a government that now owes tens of trillions. Credit& Lending

The Founding Fathers spoke of the importance of a dependable medium of exchange, and they warned us exactly what would happen if we abandoned it.

George Washington wrote that paper money would “ruin commerce, oppress the honest, and open the door to every species of fraud and injustice.”

Thomas Jefferson called it “the ghost of money” and warned that its abuses break up the measure of value, turning private property into a lottery. He viewed  bankingestablishments and long-term government debt as more dangerous than standing armies.Banking

James Madison declared paper money “unjust” and unconstitutional because it violates property rights as surely as seizing land.

John Adams pointed to “downright ignorance of the nature of coin, credit and circulation” as the source of America’s  economicperplexities. Economics

They had lived through the disaster of the Continental dollar, worthless paper that taught them a hard lesson:

Sound money isn’t optional. It’s foundational to liberty, commerce, and justice. That’s why the Constitution explicitly ties money to gold and silver.

Yet here we are, 250 years after declaring independence, celebrating with fireworks while the  currencythey envisioned has been replaced by a system that quietly transfers wealth from the productive middle class to debtors, asset owners, and the financial elite.

The Immunity Trap

Before dawn on Sunday, Iraq’s prime minister sent the counter-terror force built to fight ISIS into Baghdad’s Green Zone and arrested 47 of the country’s own political class.

Among them was the vice-chair of the parliamentary committee meant to police corruption. For 20 years these people were untouchable. On Sunday the immunity that always held did not.

The untouchables, taken in one night

The counter-terror service does not make corruption arrests. It was built to fight ISIS. On Sunday it was turned inward. The men it took had spent two decades above the law, protected by an immunity that came with their seats. The figures named as the ones who kept the banking reforms and the oil revenue law from passing for years were in the same sweep.

The same weekend, the US Treasury moved on corruption networks in Cambodia, the Congo and Sudan. What reads like a run of unrelated scandals is one campaign. The protection is coming off in one capital after another.

One date explains all of it

Every thread in Baghdad points at the same date. Within 2 weeks Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi flies to Washington to meet President Trump, and he means to land with a finished, clean government. A clean house is the price of the meeting.

• The sweep – 47 officials detained, roughly 20 billion dinar and gold seized, about 86 million dollars in cash recovered this month
• The cabinet – a special session set for July 5 to seat the final ministers
• Washington – al-Zaidi meets President Trump in mid-July with a government in hand
• The prize – the oil revenue law buried for 19 years, and the national budget that finally follows it
