  • Making his case in a fresh interview, Roger Stone accused top officials at the FBI of turning the law enforcement agency into a partisan secret police. “We have a group of politicized thugs at the top of the FBI, who are using the FBI – and I hate to say it – as Joe Biden’s personal Gestapo,” Stone said, referring to the notorious Nazi secret police service. In the interview with WABC 770 AM radio, Stone claimed the committee’s interest in him is the continuation of a pattern of legal harassment of people in Trump’s orbit. He complained that the subpoena, which he said had only added “insult to injury,” looked to him more like a “press release” and was disclosed to the public before his own lawyers received it.
  • The Russian-backed Nord Stream 2 pipeline, linking Siberia’s gas fields to consumers in the EU, won’t commence operations for another six months, Berlin’s ambassador to Ukraine has revealed on Monday. In an interview published by Interfax Ukraine, Anka Feldhusen commented on proposals from Kiev to transit an additional 55 billion cubic meters of gas to the EU as part of a special deal. “This is an interesting proposal, because Nord Stream 2 will definitely not work for another six months,” she said. However, at the same time, she cautioned that Kiev does not have it entirely within its power to supply Western Europe with energy. “It’s not as easy as we think because the gas is in Russia, not in Ukraine, the transfer point is on your eastern border,” she went on.
  • A proposal to temporarily relocate Nuremburg’s opera house to two former Nazi-linked sites in the city, including the party’s infamous rally grounds, has come under fire over its potential risks to historical education. A temporary venue for performances is required since the opera house is in need of major repair works expected to take several years, according to German media. Over the weekend, however, the ‘History for All’ association criticized the planned move due to the apparent risks to lessons on Nazi ideology and propaganda being compromised. The historical society warned in an open letter on Sunday that showing visitors the original facades of Nazi structures could highlight “fascist megalomania.”
  • The Prince of Wales’ office has branded claims that the heir to the British throne had speculated about his future grandchildren’s skin color as “fiction”. The Prince’s daughter-in-law Meghan Markle, whose mother is a black American, claimed during a bombshell interview with US chat-show host Oprah Winfrey in March that concerns about how dark her children’s skin would be had been raised by a member of the Royal Family. She refused to reveal their name, but Winfrey later confirmed it was neither the Queen nor her husband, Prince Philip.
  • A married couple who fled a quarantine hotel for suspected Omicron strain carriers in the Netherlands have been removed from a flight by the Dutch military police just as their plane was about to take off. The incident unfolded at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport on board a flight that was set to depart for Spain at around 6pm on Sunday, the Netherlands armed forces confirmed in a statement.
  • Taliban promised a ‘narcotics-free’ Afghanistan as it took power in mid-August and has since set some plans in motion. Millions of Afghans are addicted to drugs. Up to 10% of the nation’s population – roughly 3.5 million people, including 800,000 women and children – take drugs, according to Ahmed Zahir Sultani, the head of a Kabul hospital responsible for the rehabilitation of drug addicts. Massive drug addiction came as a legacy of the country’s tumultuous past. The Afghan drug industry has flourished since the 1980s, including through the decades of the US and NATO occupation. The Taliban itself did not shy away from profiting from the drugs trade in the past, but declared its own “war on drugs” after seizing power in August 2021.
  • A Russian warship has carried out a test-fire of a state-of-the-art missile capable of flying many times faster than the speed of sound as part of exercises off the Arctic Ocean, Russian military bosses confirmed on Monday. In a statement, Moscow’s Ministry of Defense said that the Zircon missile was launched from the Admiral Gorshkov frigate from a position in the White Sea, and successfully struck a naval target more than 400 kilometers away. According to the announcement, surface ships and naval aircraft from the Northern Fleet helped to close off the region for the security of the launch.
  • Ghislaine Maxwell is set to go on trial in New York City. The proceedings, which will last for about six weeks with a brief pause over Christmas, are expected to shed light on the alleged sexual trafficking network created by financier Jeffrey Epstein and whether his powerful friends – Queen Elizabeth’s second son Prince Andrew and former US President Bill Clinton – were implicated in his crimes. Maxwell’s legal team plans to challenge the claims by saying that the accusers might have faulty memories. The legal team has hired leading experts in psychiatry and memory, who will testify during the trial. One of them is Professor Elizabeth Loftus, the from UCI School of Social Ecology. She has participated in numerous court cases, including such high-profile proceedings as the trial of Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein, serial killer Ted Bundy, and athlete-turned-actor OJ Simpson. “She will describe scientific research showing that false memories can be described with confidence, detail, and emotion, just like true memories”, reads a letter written by Maxwell’s lawyer.
  • Hunter Biden received a 3.16-carat diamond worth $80,000 from Ye Jianming, the ex-chairman of the now-bankrupt energy giant CEFC with ties to Beijing, as a gift to seal a lucrative deal he inked with the son of then-US Vice President Joe Biden, New York Post columnist Miranda Devine has claimed in her upcoming book called “Laptop from Hell”. Devine’s findings about the peculiarities of Hunter’s murky deal with the Chinese businessman come mostly from the notorious laptop that the presidential son purportedly dropped off at a Delaware repair shop in 2019, but forgot to collect. A portion of the information detailed in the book also came from leaked online conversations and anonymous sources.
  • A total of 50 Fijian troops will be sent to the Solomon Islands to maintain law and order in the wake of deadly anti-government riots, Fijian Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama announced on Monday. Bainimarama said that troops, led by Major Toni Keve, will be embedded with the Australian Defence Force present on the ground to assist the Solomon Islands Police in curbing the unrest. The prime minister said that reinforcements are being sent “out of concern for the safety and well-being of our Pacific sisters and brothers in the Solomon Islands”. Papua New Guinea has also deployed 34 soldiers to the Pacific Island nation. Solomon Islands Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare made a direct request for assistance from the Australian government on Thursday after rioters burned and destroyed houses and businesses in Honiara, primarily in Chinatown.
  • Members of Hindu group, Bajrang Dal, allegedly barged into a church’s prayer hall in the Hassan district of Karnataka state on Sunday and stopped the religious service midway, requesting the congregation to step out of the hall. They claimed religious conversions were taking place there. Video clips have appeared on social media showing members of Bajrang Dal engaged in heated discussions with Christian women.
  • Food companies in the Leningrad Region have signed contracts to supply products to the UAE during a business mission to the United Arab Emirates, a member of the region’s press service said. “In three days of the business mission, regional companies held several dozen meetings with food distributors and visited petrochemical processing facilities in Abu Dhabi. Major distributors supplying UAE retail chains were interested in frozen berries and finished berry products from Karelia Berries LLC, as well as frozen desserts and LLC Globus Elit’s new product, cheese sauce. Following the negotiations, the regional companies are ready to conclude contracts for the supply of berry products and frozen cakes”, the press service’s representative said.
  • Jack Dorsey has decided to step down as CEO of Twitter, the company has announced. He will be replaced by Chief Technology Officer Parag Agrawal. The board of directors has unanimously approved his candidacy. Dorsey will remain a member of the board until his term expires in 2022 at a meeting with shareholders. “I’ve decided to leave Twitter because I believe the company is ready to move on from its founders. My trust in Parag as Twitter’s CEO is deep. His work over the past 10 years has been transformational. I’m deeply grateful for his skill, heart, and soul. It’s his time to lead”, said Dorsey.
