Did Anyone say Earthquake? – November 17, 2021

Experts say ‘earthquake’ was suspected ‘sonic event’ as residents report shaking homes

Shaking homes, rattling windows and ground tremors were felt following an ‘earthquake’ that experts later said was a ‘sonic event’.

The British Geological Society said it initially received reports of a suspected earthquake at around 3.50pm on Wednesday (November 17).

But following analysis, seismologists determined it to have been the result of a sound as opposed to movements in the ground.

Reports of the ‘earthquake’ came in from York and around North Yorkshire and parts of Lincolnshire.

One resident, Dr Amy-Jane Beer, tweeted: “Felt in the air and all through our bodies near Castle Howard.

“Kids froze, dog ran for her life. Former now thrilled, latter hiding under my bed.”

A councillor from Whitby said he could “see the windows vibrating”.

“The house shook, I could see the windows vibrating… It sounded like something really heavy falling over in the house next door,” Phillip Trumper told the PA news agency.

“I suppose it (could) have been a sonic boom,” the 48-year-old added.

On Twitter, BGS said: “BGS have received a number of reports from residents in North Yorkshire who reported an event at approximately 15:50 UTC today.

“Reports described ‘house shook and conservatory creaked’, ‘a low rumble ending in a thud’, ‘windows rattled’ and ‘felt the ground tremble’.

“Data from the BGS seismic networks in the region were examined and signals consistent with a possible sonic origin were recorded between 15:47:42s and 15:49:23s UTC on several stations, on the BGS seismic network, in North Yorkshire.

The day a Glasgow earthquake rocked the city but was mistaken for a bank robbery

After a rumble that caused damage to the inside of multiple buildings and confusion amongst the city, bank caretakers alerted the police to what they thought was a robbery.

While the 3.1 magnitude tremors recorded in Scotland this week barely registered at all in Glasgow, the city has been much closer to the epicentre in the past.

In 1910, an unexpected and precarious incident occurred that shook the city in more ways than one.

An earthquake, that at the time was a little understood phenomenon, shook surrounding buildings, leaving people wondering what they were witnessing.

The tremor led people to believe several different things and what followed was a series of comical and unfortunate events.

The earthquake struck on Wednesday 14 December 1910 and fortunately, no injuries were recorded, though many people spent the night picking up smashed crockery and rearranging their houses due to the seismic shake.

At the Anderston Branch of the Glasgow Savings Bank, a crowd of 1000 people gathered to watch police investigate the supposed robbery and at the British Linen Bank, the earthquake forced open the boiler room.https://get-latest.convrse.media/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.glasgowlive.co.uk%2Fnews%2Fhistory%2Fday-glasgow-earthquake-rocked-city-22190399&cre=center&cip=24&view=web

At the Central Police Office, the noise reportedly resembled a heavy train passing over a bridge. Meanwhile in restaurants, diners were alarmed as glasses began to tremor and fly off tables.

In Govan, a tenement building was so badly shaken that the occupiers were too afraid to return home. The earthquake was a mystery to everyone and in some cases, began to excite locals as they didn’t know what to expect next.

Along the Clydeside, passengers waiting for their ferry thought that it had crashed with great force against the landing stage.

In Paisley, the force of the earthquake resulted in a number of calls being put in to the local police, enquiring about a possible explosion in the area. As officers didn’t know what was going on, they assumed that judging by number of calls that mentioned an explosion, there must have been one.

The event was the topic of conversation for a number of days afterwards, with people checking every room in their house for potential damage.
