This Native American Indian Legend has stood the test of time β and with good reason. Celebrated for its potent simplicity and widespread applicability, the story of Two Wolves resonates with everyone who reads it.
In its essence, it teaches us that negative thinking is perfectly normal. But, we should never underestimate the dangerous power of fostering a negative inner dialogue.
At a minimum, negative thinking can overwhelm our positive thoughts, destructing any and every good thought in its path.
The legend goes:
An old Indian Cherokee chief used a fable of two wolves to teach his grandson about life.
He began, βIt is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves. One is evil β he is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.β
While the other, he said, βis good. He is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith.β
According to the Indian chief, this internal struggle is not experienced by the few, but rather, is an inner battle fought by every person on this earth, βThe same fight is going on inside you β and inside every other person, too.β
The grandson asked, βGrandfather, which wolf will win?β
Wisely, the old chief smiled and replied, βThe one you feed.β
