Full Moon is Thursday, January 12 at 4:34 AM Mountain Standard Time (MST).

We recognize that home is important, security is important, creativity is important and community is important. We are yearning for something outrageous and wonderful and magical and eccentric to happen in our lives, something to lift us up and inspire us to be better, to take the next step and to leave anything of a lower frequency behind. Spend a little time contemplating magic and your ability to create miracles.

This is a challenging time and it is easy for the cynic in us to disregard the possibilities, opportunities and magic, and dwell instead on the potential futility of any action that we may be inspired to take. More than ever it is important to focus on Expansion as one of the needs of the year and acknowledge it in your own lives. Keep the energy moving no matter what and don’t take anything personally.

Cancer Full Moon

With a predominantly feminine chart and a Full Moon in responsive and sensitive Cancer, we look to our solutions flowing from our soft inner body-our feelings, our hearts, our feminine wisdom. But let’s not negate that hard shell and those protective claws. We may see those in action as well.

Cancer is the sign of the Mother archetype, the Nourisher. As the only sign ruled by the Moon, Cancer waxes and wanes, moods change frequently just like the phases of the Moon. The Moon is of the dark time, the feminine, the receptive, watery and emotionally present. A profound sensitivity is bestowed on Cancer, and on you during a Cancer Full Moon. Just as water morphs to fill its container of any shape, so Cancer responds to all surrounding influences –spoken and unspoken- and like a sponge absorbs them all. Cancer’s psychic abilities, foreshadowing and empathetic awareness stem from this ability to become who and what is around them. Security and how we meet our needs for a safe environment where we can relax into our feeling mode and expose our vulnerabilities will also be prominent at this moon. ‘I feel, therefore I am’ is Cancer’s motto. Cancer also rules memory, the past, the ancestors. Watch what surfaces from the past at this time. Cancer rules the home-the place of domestic nourishment and safety, also the family, tribe and clan that support stability and the nourishment of the young to further the clan. Opposite Moon full in Cancer (Mother) lies Sun in Capricorn (Father) and the energy of the structures (in principle) that support the community insuring the safety of the home like business, government, civil service, infrastructure.

There’s more to consider for this Moon. There’s a major challenge (fly in the ointment) for the Full Moon axis at 22º Cancer/Capricorn. Jupiter (22º) opposite the volatile trio of Uranus, Eris and Ceres (20-24º) is very closely squaring the Sun and Moon. This creates a Grand Square–an emotional crisis and opportunity. Think of a perfect square with a major planet at each corner. Sacred geometry that challenges us to integrate the juice of each of the four elements-earth, water, air, fire (physicality, emotionality, mentality, spirituality) all in cardinal signs those that initiate action, seek activity, align to beginnings with enthusiasm and curiosity. Something is trying to get our attention here; a trip wire has been laid. Can we turn it into an unexpected opportunity? Accept that you have to get active to bring these powerful times to fruition in your life.

Help comes from a trine from Saturn and Juno at 22º Sagittarius. They provide the Uranus corner of the Grand Square (and the Jupiter corner too) with an outlet for all this stressful energy. Discipline, doing the right thing, telling the hard truth especially in your relationships, being loyal to your beliefs, championing the vulnerable, empowering your feminine values, relying on the wisdom of wise elders will all be positive actions in the face of stress and tension represented by this Grand Square. You’re not unfamiliar with this tense energy as just last week January 6-11 the Sun in Capricorn has triggered the T-square of Pluto, Uranus, and Jupiter. The Full Moon just contributes the full-on emotional element to the mix. Use your skillful means to guide these powerful energies to starting something you’ve never done before. Surprise and delight yourself with your boldness. Capricorn and its ruler Saturn are powerful manifestation juju! Did I mention the Sun sits with Pluto – main man for creating through intention, desire and strength.

The Feminine aspect resonates so fully with a water sign Moon like Cancer, and to add to the depth of the emotional undulation is the luscious conjunction of Venus with Neptune both in Pisces. When you combine Venus, the Goddess of Love and Beauty (as well as abundance) with Neptune in its own sign Pisces (where it has not been since the Civil War), you have at your beck and call a portal for the highest expression of compassionate love and union with the divine. Access is granted to bring into your heart all that you find yourself in resistance to, all that seems unworthy of love, all that seeks to disempower and appeal only to fear and wash it with the clearing and cleansing energy of love and compassion. Pisces gives you access to the full range of dimensions from the depth of the ocean to the highest spiritual realms. Expect your intuition and imagination to be fully engaged. Mars is here too in Pisces until the end of the month apprenticed to Chiron and deepening his masculine love, service and appreciation of the Feminine.

Mercury in the last degree of Sagittarius is happily on a direct course now since January 8 and will reenter Capricorn on the 12th and fully return to the degree where its retrograde began on January 27 (Capricorn 15º). Starting the New Year with a retrograde Mercury and so many planets in watery Pisces has lent an inward focus to setting intentions, more contemplation than action, more wide focus than narrow focus. We look forward to four retrograde Mercury periods this year – the next begins in April, then August, December. After Mercury turns direct on the 8th, we have almost a full month with all planets in forward motion. Use it!

Chinese New Year begins January 28 – Year of the Fire Rooster. Eclipse season begins early this year on February 10-11 with the first lunar eclipse in Leo and February 26 for the first solar eclipse in Pisces. August will be our other eclipse period.
