Finally, today I went to a shoe shop to discuss replacing walking shoes that had worn out too fast. As I was talking to the kind manager, I noticed three little white feathers taped to the top of the EFTPOS machine. I said, ‘Oh, lovely. What do they represent..?’ She said that she had found them on the shop floor and they represent her late mother.

I asked very gently when her mother passed over. She got teary and said, ‘Two years ago. It’s her birthday today…’ I went behind the counter and gave her a hug. We both shed tears.

In the end I decided to keep my shoes because there was no suitable replacement. Clearly the shoes were not the reason for me visiting the store today.
