In Vedic cosmology, time is not linear but cyclical, with each cycle of creation, preservation, and dissolution lasting for a vast span of years. The basic unit of these cycles is the Yuga, and four Yugas make up a Mahayuga (Great Age) Wikipedia+1.

The Four Yugas

Each Yuga is progressively shorter and marked by a decline in dharma (righteousness) and moral/physical quality of humanity:

1. Satya Yuga (Krita Yuga) – Golden Age
   • Duration: 1,728,000 human years
   • Qualities: Truth, virtue, no suffering
   • Metal: Gold
   • At its end, a Sandhya (transitional period) of 172,800 years occurs kaalis.ai.
2. Treta Yuga – Silver Age
   • Duration: 1,296,000 human years
   • Qualities: Righteousness begins to decline
   • Metal: Silver
   • Sandhya: 129,600 years kaalis.ai.
3. Dvapara Yuga – Bronze Age
   • Duration: 864,000 human years
   • Qualities: Virtue and sin become equal
   • Metal: Bronze
   • Sandhya: 86,400 years kaalis.ai.
4. Kali Yuga – Iron/Dark Age
   • Duration: 432,000 human years
   • Qualities: Darkness predominates, minimal dharma
   • Metal: Iron
   • Sandhya: 43,200 years kaalis.ai.

Mahayuga total: 4,320,000 human years (12,000 divine years, where 1 divine year = 360 human years) Wikipedia.

Larger Cycles

• Manvantara: 71 Mahayugas (~311.04 million human years)
• Kalpa: 1,000 Mahayugas (~1.2 billion human years) — one day of Brahma Wikipedia.

Current Position

According to traditional Hindu reckoning, the Kali Yuga began on February 17/18, 3102 BCE. As of 2026 CE, we are about 5,128 years into Kali Yuga, with roughly 426,872 years remaining before its end kaalis.ai.

End of Kali Yuga

At the close of Kali Yuga, a cataclysm occurs, followed by a period of dissolution (Pralaya) before the next cycle’s Satya Yuga begins, ushered in by the advent of Kalki, the tenth avatar of Vishnu Wikipedia.

In summary: Vedic cosmology’s “ages” are the four Yugas — Satya, Treta, Dvapara, and Kali — each shorter than the last, forming a Mahayuga of 4.32 million human years, within a much larger cyclical framework of Manvantaras and Kalpas.
