Trump says the war with Iran is over. The naval blockade lifts the moment the deal is signed, possibly this weekend in Europe.
The country with the most riding on that signature is Iraq.
The Deal On The Table
Trump cancelled the strikes on Thursday and said the agreement will be signed in Europe, possibly within days. The terms as he described them: the blockade lifts once the documents are signed, Iran commits to never holding a nuclear weapon, and reporting on the draft describes a 60-day window with Hormuz traffic running unrestricted. Tehran gets 30 days to pull its own mines out of the water. Iran’s Fars agency says no text is approved yet. Oil fell below $87 within the hour of the announcement. Gold went the other way, up 2 percent to $4,159.
The Numbers That Matter
• 93 million barrels – Iraq’s monthly crude flow through Hormuz before the war. April’s count was 10 million.
• $7 billion a month – what Iraq’s oil brought in before the strait shut. Behind the blockade it fell below $1 billion.
500,000 barrels per day – Prime Minister al-Zaidi’s standing offer to Washington. It becomes deliverable the moment the strait clears.
• 9 cabinet seats – still vacant, with defence and interior among them. Parliament returns July 1. A full cabinet writes the budget, and Iraq’s exchange rate is written inside the budget.
• First complete arms inventory – Kataib Imam Ali handed the state its full personnel, weapons, and equipment data. No Iran-backed faction had ever done that.
Why It Matters For The Dinar
The rate is set in Iraq’s federal budget law. A budget needs a finished cabinet to write it and revenue to fill it. The signature restores the revenue, and the cabinet is weeks from completion.
