I heard the veil the darkies put around the planet, many years ago, was the reason we have alien ships crashing, and keeping people from seeing what’s really out there. I doubt the aliens would be careless, or make junky ships. And considering so many crashes over the past 150 years, I’m leaning with the veil answer.
