The firmament in the Bible is the tremendous dome-shaped expanse of sky separating the upper atmosphere or “waters” from the lower waters of the earth. On the second day of the creation account, God created the firmament:

Then God said, “Let there be a space between the waters, to separate the waters of the heavens from the waters of the earth.” And that is what happened. God made this space to separate the waters of the earth from the waters of the heavens. God called the space “sky.”
And evening passed and morning came, marking the second day. (Genesis 1:6–8, NLT)

The Firmament in the Bible

  • The firmament is first mentioned in the Bible in chapter one of the book of Genesis.
  • The firmament is a ceiling or dome-like vault stretching out to form a solid canopy over the earth, separating the heavens above from the earth below.
  • Sometimes, the firmament is called “heaven” in the Bible.
  • The word “firmament” comes from the Latin firmamentum and appears 17 times in the King James Version of the Bible, as well as other older translations.

Biblical Cosmology

People of the ancient near East, including the Hebrew people, shared similar beliefs about the origin and structure of the world. The earliest ideas seem to suggest that the sky was a solid dome, curtain, or heavenly dam, separating the waters of heaven from the earth below. God would “open the windows of heaven” to pour down rain on the land as well as blessings on the people of the earth (Genesis 7:11; 2 Kings 7:2; Malachi 3:10). In Job 37:18, the skies are described as “hard as a cast metal mirror.” Proverbs 8:28 says the Lord “made firm the skies above.” (ESV)

God created the firmament on day two of creation, dividing the existing formless mass of waters into layers. On day three, God separated the lower waters and caused dry land to appear. He also filled the earth with trees, plants, and other vegetation. On the fourth day of creation, God placed the sun, moon, and stars into the expanse of the firmament (Genesis 1:14–18).

Firmament in the Bible

The original Hebrew word (raqiyaʿ), translated as “firmament” in the King James Version of the Bible (and New King James Version), means expanse, spread out, space, or vault. Newer Bible translations use terms like “an expanse,” “vault,” “sky,” and “canopy”  in place of “the firmament.”

While a vast expanse of atmospheric space may seem like an empty void to the present-day mind, the firmament was perceived in the Bible as a solid canopy or arch intended to hold up the heavenly objects. This perception helps explain the application of the term “firmament.” The word appears nine times in Genesis 1:6–20 in connection with the creation.

The prophet Daniel depicts the “brightness of the firmament” (Daniel 12:3). In Psalm 19:1, “The heavens declare the glory of God; And the firmament shows His handiwork.” Worshippers are encouraged to praise the Lord “in His mighty firmament!” in Psalm 150:1.

In the book of Ezekiel during the prophet’s chariot vision, the firmament is described as “the color of an awesome crystal, stretched out over” the heads of the living creatures (Ezekiel 1:22, 23, 25, 26). Ezekiel 10:1 says, “There in the firmament … appeared something like a sapphire stone, having the appearance of the likeness of a throne.” These illustrations of the firmament symbolize the seat of God’s power and sovereignty.

Depictions of the Firmament

The Bible uses graphic imagery to conceptualize elements of the firmament. The psalmist says God “opened the doors of heaven” to rain down heavenly manna for His people to eat. In Psalm 104:2, God stretched out the heavens “like a curtain.”  The prophet Malachi tells of God’s promise to open “the windows of heaven” and pour out uncontainable blessings of provision (Malachi 3:10, NKJV).

    And I could give a DAMN about what King James said.
    Bible’s been a propaganda piece for centuries. Same goes for all Abrahamic religion.

    Alien ships have been coming to this planet for a loooong time, and folks like the Dogon of Africa and the Native Americans speak of visits from star people and mention specific star systems.

    The dark ages are over, folks. The dark ages was when the BIBLE, and the CHURCH was the word of law. And remember what the church did to folks like Copernicus & Galileo? Those 2 got off LUCKY, others did not.

      Hmm…perhaps the big Bible push is for public buy-in? At any rate, I kinda like the flat-earth idea with a dome over Earth.
      No doubt about it, humans have been lied to about e-v-e-r-y thing, and no one has any factual evidence of the truth!

        Look at lunar eclipses….they are ROUND, not a line. Those 2 videos cover it easy. Flat earth is a pile of baloney.

        A far better place is to “go with the flow” as well as trusting personal intuition. This is why I don’t really listen to much of what I post…I like a fresh field to operate from?
        Yet…each will find/listen/glean information in the way best for them, so I choose to post EVERYTHING so folks can be drawn to what resonates for them?

LOL, perhaps there is an energetic grid, as in the ET technology if you research the Kabballah and the Ashayanna Deane material, you’ll understand the way they set up many energetic grids to entrap humans in the matrix construct. See the photo of that person pointing to the sun (son)? That is the hub or entrance into the universe from other dimensional realities. The only way…thru the son (sol)….so maybe perhaps if people innerstand that we’ve been a captured universe and in a hologram for a long time, a false light reality and program.

        But it is NOT a ‘dome’, and the planet is a SPHERE, not a pancake.

        All I have to do is look through a telescope…and I see ROUND planets and moons. WHY should earth being some exception? The Jesus freaks are sooooo desperate to be the ONLY intelligent life in the universe, and can’t stand the idea of alien life, hence why they shout “There are no aliens, they are demons!!!!”.

Well, they are programmed, but I saw alot that were not Jesus freaks but only jumped on the band wagon when they had someone tell them the Bible says the earth is flat cuz of some firmament, and the sky rolling back and rain coming in…LOL, it’s not just the jesus freaks so yeah…it’s just another divide and conquer thing. Alex Collier says he’s been out there and said the earth is not a dinner plate and usually won’t comment on it because he says it’s nonsense. And polar shifts, and eclipses…still not explanation for those, and I can entertain the thought, but just a thought…not that it’s a reality because it makes no sense….unless it was a video game reality, in a 1 dimensional plane….as in a 1 dimension perception. But I’m in 3d so yeah, it’s not flat to me….as that don’t make sense. but not gonna argue with those that believe it, it’s ok if they do….matters not to me in the end of things…they’ll find out eventually.

    2. Oh yeah, you are right about that, but also the Bible was coded, the lamp oil being about the pineal gland. Many things were not LITERAL events, and which is why they removed many books and merged paganism with catholicism, the council of Nicea were catholic priests. Also, the Essenes and the Gnostics writings got destroyed, the Vatican had destroyed the Library of Alexandria so much of our actual history was removed and they of course rewrote history…but encoded writings because of course if you weren’t part of their religion, you got burned at the stake as a heretic or witch.
      Although, it’s been witches, warlocks and covens that ran this world for a long time, Markuk being the main guy along with Enlil during those times of the old testament God Yahweh.
      So words are frequencies, their names of these various beings changed over time as their frequncy changed so it’s like there’s all these god beings/ETs and played many roles and screwed up humanity’s DNA so we did not live as long, and they’d put us in their false heaven/hell, and recycle us zapping our memories so this isn’t our first rodeo…..only the matrix system is being dismantled now, so their access to the underworld and the halls of Amenti is over, their time in the game is over….Humanity is very powerful if we only can unite and say NO. At least 51% of the humans, it may also include the hybrids of course they’ve been breeding with humans for a very long time. It’s all so convoluted…but you get why they have lied to us. They know if we knew what they were doing we could say no and their prison planet agenda, lucerferian agenda would be over in a minute.

I can imagine what ever I wish, and it’s not up to you if that ever happens because in order for us to get anywhere in this matrix we must unite in spite of our differences, but I know what you mean about the left and right…all politics and when they wake up and realize it’s all controlled by one group, it could happen, at least I can imagine it and it’s not mental masterbation….LOL what a term to use for a creation of mind as if it’s not gonna happen….maybe not in your world but in mind…all of it is possible.
