βThe situation is very catastrophic. There are bodies everywhere – in the sea, in the valleys, under the buildings,” the aviation minister of the eastern ruling government, Hichem Chkiuat, told Reuters by telephone on Tuesday. He expects that the final number of victims will be βvery , very high.β βI’m not exaggerating when I say that 25 percent of the city has disappeared.β Many buildings have collapsed.
According to the Libyan National Army, dams above the city burst and entire parts of the city and their residents were washed into the sea. The authorities had already spoken on Monday of at least 2,000 dead and thousands missing in the affected areas.
