When to See the Full Moons in August 2023
August 1: Full Sturgeon Moon
August’s first full Moon will appear on the afternoon of Tuesday, August 1, reaching peak illumination at 2:32 P.M. Eastern Time. That evening, look toward the southeast after sunset to catch a glimpse of the Sturgeon Moon rising. You may have heard that there are four supermoons in a row this year; the August 1 supermoon is the second supermoon of this unusual sequence. “Supermoon” is a catchy term for what astronomers call “a perigean full Moon” which is when the full Moon happens at (or very near) the exact time when the Moon is closest to us in its orbit.
The name “Sturgeon Moon” comes from some Native American groups, primarily those in the Great Lakes region of North America, who found that sturgeon were most abundantly caught during this month.
This Sturgeon Moon will beckon us to connect with others as we ponder our place in the world. During this lunation you may experience a few different energetic frequencies. First, the full Moon will be square to Jupiter, which may make you feel larger than life—social, uplifted, and eager for laughter!
The Sturgeon Moon got its name because of the giant fish that were abundant in the Great Lakes called sturgeon.
North American fishing tribes called August’s full moon the sturgeon moon since the species appeared in number during this month. It’s also been called the green corn moon, the grain moon, and the red moon for the reddish hue it often takes on in the summer haze.
