In the twilight of a presidency, an age-old ritual unfolds where the outgoing administration prepares to pass the baton to the new leader. This transition, as sacrosanct as the oath of office, symbolizes America’s undying faith in democracy. Yet, once in a blue moon, the waning embers of an outgoing presidency burn with an ominous glow, casting long shadows of intrigue, conspiracies, and political subterfuge. The twilight of the Obama administration, it seems, was one such enigmatic evening.
Today, we lift the veil off a chapter of American politics that’s shrouded in secrecy and trepidation. Armed with 217 pages of heavily redacted documents from the National Security Agency (NSA), provided to us by The Daily Signal through a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request, we take you on a rollercoaster ride through corridors of power where politics and espionage dance their dangerous waltz. So buckle up, as we unravel how Biden and other high-ranking officials from the Obama administration allegedly sought to “torpedo” the incoming Trump administration.
Before we proceed, let’s set the stage for our dramatic narrative. These NSA documents take us back to late 2016 when Donald Trump, the maverick businessman and reality TV star, shocked the world by winning the presidency. While America and the world grappled with this seismic shift in the political landscape, a seemingly coordinated effort was being forged in the corridors of power to undermine the Trump administration.
At the heart of this Machiavellian plot was Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn, the decorated army veteran selected by President-elect Trump as his national security adviser. Flynn, a charismatic yet controversial figure, had previously served under Obama but found himself at odds with the administration’s narrative about the threats posed by Al Qaeda, eventually leading to his dismissal.
In an uncanny twist of fate, Flynn’s past affiliations became his Achilles’ heel. Numerous Obama administration officials, ranging from Vice President Joe Biden to various ambassadors and Treasury and Energy Department officials, gained access to secret information about Flynn. These “cloak and dagger” activities, documented meticulously in the NSA files, reveal the incessant stream of requests for information about Flynn from late November 2016 to early January 2017.
Let’s take a moment to address the elephant in the room. “Unmasking,” a term that has been making rounds in the media, refers to the identification of individuals in intelligence reports who are usually anonymized for privacy and security reasons. In the context of our story, Michael Flynn was the “unmasked” individual. Flynn’s unmasking was not an act of random bureaucratic curiosity. Instead, it was the handiwork of Barack Obama’s top advisers, setting off a chain of events that would forever change the political landscape.
In May 2020, the plot thickened as Rick Grenell, Trump’s acting Director of National Intelligence, declassified information related to the unmasking of Flynn, sharing it with Congress. Amidst these revelations, it’s pertinent to mention that three of the Obama administration officials who had access to Flynn’s information are now holding high-ranking positions in the Biden administration.
The man pulling the strings behind the scenes was none other than Denis McDonough, Obama’s chief of staff throughout his second term. Today, McDonough serves as the Secretary of Veterans Affairs under President Biden. Samantha Power, Obama’s ambassador to the United Nations, was another central figure in this saga, making numerous requests for information on Flynn. Presently, she is at the helm of the U.S. Agency for International Development in the Biden administration.
Completing this trio is Elizabeth Sherwood-Randall, deputy secretary at Obama’s Energy Department, who is currently Biden’s homeland security adviser. Their involvement in the Flynn affair poses an interesting query: What was the motive behind their relentless pursuit of Flynn-related information during the transition period?
In addition to the trio, at least seven U.S. officials working with NATO, including then-NATO Ambassador Douglas Lute, gained access to Flynn’s information. NSA’s internal emails reveal that Obama’s ambassador to Turkey, John Bass, also obtained information on Flynn. The reasons cited? It was provided to Bass so he could “better understand and assess the foreign intelligence information contained therein.” How this ‘understanding’ and ‘assessment’ played out in the grand scheme of things is open to interpretation.
Interestingly, the names of John Tefft, then U.S. ambassador to Russia, and several members of his staff surfaced in the documents as having sought and obtained information on Flynn. The NSA emails state: “No further action may be taken on nor dissemination be made of this information [on Flynn] without prior approval of NSA.” Yet, it appears that these directives were given little heed.
Furthermore, Obama’s ambassador to Italy, John Phillips, along with his top staff, had access to information about Flynn. It seems that the Flynn dossier was a sought-after commodity in the outgoing administration, with even National security and law enforcement officials in the Obama administration, including FBI Director James Comey, CIA Director John Brennan, and National Intelligence Director James Clapper, gaining access.
The culmination of these machinations led to Flynn’s resignation as Trump’s national security advisor after merely 23 days, a record in itself. The Flynn episode played a significant role in the subsequent investigation into the alleged Trump-Russia collusion during the 2016 presidential election. Flynn was eventually pardoned by Trump, marking a rather dramatic end to this convoluted chapter.
As we draw the curtains on our narrative, we can’t help but feel a sense of intrigue and dismay. The alleged conspiracy within the Obama administration to torpedo the incoming Trump administration reveals the complexity and volatility of American politics. It provides a grim reminder that the theater of politics often includes chapters of deceit, subterfuge, and intrigue. But as we, the people, turn the pages of these chapters, we become the custodians of democracy, ensuring its survival in the face of the most daunting challenges. After all, the essence of democracy lies not just in the corridors of power, but in the hands of those who hold the power accountable.
