Water levels in more than 60 different rivers have risen above warning levels, forcing more than 1.2 million people to evacuate. Authorities say more than 38,000 houses have collapsed and nearly 880,000 hectares of crops have been damaged. The Chinese government says it has disbursed US$103 million in emergency aid so far to help southern and central provinces deal with flooding. The annual flooding is even greater than usual and the past week has been particularly wet. Changsa, the capital city of Hunan province, has recorded nearly half a meter of rain in a week. much higher than average and close to average can be expected throughout June, July, August and September.
