G. Truckers convoy: Cities across Canada are mobilizing as protests spread. While police in Ottawa and Coutts, Alberta, are trying to deal with the ongoing blockade, protests in solidarity with Ottawa are threatening to disrupt other major cities this weekend.

Ottawa: A protest against measures to combat the pandemic, which caused the center of Ottawa to be stopped by dozens of large trucks, is an “increasingly explosive and dangerous demonstration,” the chief of the metropolitan police said on Friday.”We are determined to put an end to this demonstration,” he said. Police plan to contain the demonstration in the area south of the hill with concrete barriers and large equipment to control the roads in the city center. They are also considering closing bridges and highway exits. Illegal parking by demonstrators can lead to law enforcement, eviction and confiscation. Teams collect information including vehicle registration, driver ID, insurance status and other relevant evidence to be used in prosecution. The Minister of Public Safety said that the RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police) approved the request of the Mayor of Ottawa to support the city police.
Quebec: City authorities are stepping up security measures around the legislative assembly: demonstrators have been arriving since Thursday ahead of the weekend protest. The Prime Minister of Quebec is confident that the protest will not be a repeat of what is happening in Ottawa. He told reporters on Friday that the authorities would not tolerate trucks interfering with local residents. Tow trucks are ready to take out heavy trucks participating in the demonstration. None of the current members of the Legislative Assembly agreed to meet with the protesters.
Toronto: Two hospitals near the Legislative Assembly of Royal Ontario Park have canceled a small number of appointments, and Toronto police are blocking nearby roads in anticipation of a planned protest against Covid-19 measures on Saturday. The police warn that the closure may remain in force all weekend while the so-called “Freedom Convoy” arrives.
Winnipeg: The protest against the restrictions of Covid-19 began on Friday morning at the main entrance to the territory of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba in Winnipeg.The Legislative Security Service blocked the entrances to the area around the building, using concrete barriers and in one place a large wall of snow.
Regina: The Saskatchewan legislature was shut down ahead of an expected demonstration Saturday against Covid-19 restrictions. Speaker Randy Weeks said in a statement Friday that for precautionary reasons, visitor access has been suspended until the potential threat from protesters disappears. Weeks said all tours as well as educational and community events have been canceled and security has been stepped up. The protesters said the truckers’ convoy would remain until restrictions on Covid-19 were lifted in Saskatchewan. Premier Scott Moe said the Saskatchewan Party government would do so soon, but did not give a date.
Coots, Alta: Last Saturday, demonstrators began parking their trucks and other vehicles near the border in Coutts in solidarity with protesters in Ottawa. The impasse delayed travelers and truckers for several days, jeopardized trade worth millions of dollars and made it difficult for residents of the area to access basic goods and medical services.The agreement with the protesters opened one lane of traffic in both directions on one of the highways, and truckers carrying cargo were finally able to cross the border with the United States.
