Stuck open: Tower Bridge closed for second time in three months after ‘technical failure’ (Image: Getty)
Massive queues formed on either side of the London landmark as its mechanised drawbridges remained upright. The issue was blamed on a “technical failure”.
MyLondon reported that by 6pm, however, the bridge had been reopened, despite previous estimations that it would take a while to fix the technical fault.
The last time the bridge was stuck open was in August – just three months ago.
One Londoner held up this evening tweeted angrily: “It’s bl***y stuck again!”
A spokesperson for the City of London Police said earlier this evening: “Tower Bridge is currently closed to traffic and pedestrians due to technical failure.
Traffic monitor Jambuster advised: “The road is closed in both directions due to a technical issue at the bridge lift.
“Use an alternative route where possible. Delays are highly expected in the area.
“Traffic is slow moving in the area with westbound tailbacks on East Smithfield/The Highway from King David Lane and northbound tailbacks on Tower Bridge Road approaching Elephant and Castle.”
Motorists trying to travel via the bridge have reacted bemusedly to the news.
