I went to visit a friend and found him deep in thought. He said to me:
“You know, there’s a saying I don’t understand.”
“I’m all ears,” I replied gently.
“Well, you know the saying, ‘Help yourself and Heaven will help you.’”
I nodded.
“I’m having problems at work at the moment, and I’m struggling financially. I work hard, but I just can’t seem to get out of these financial difficulties. I don’t see how Heaven is helping me when I’m already doing so much!”
I remained silent, seeing how troubled my friend was. Then an idea came to me.
“What if we went to the river? We could make some offerings, and then see what happens.”
And that is what we did. We spent some time by the river. First we made offerings, then we sat in silence for a while, simply being present with the water. I noticed that my friend already seemed less troubled. More at peace.
Then I suggested that he sit on the earth and create a place of listening there.
He followed my guidance and sat down on the ground. I drew a circle around him with branches. When I closed the circle, he was inside his own personal place of listening—a place of direct connection with the Earth.
He remained there with his eyes closed for about twenty minutes. Gradually, I watched his face relax even more, and then, from within that relaxation, tears began to come.
I stayed nearby, still and silent, blending into the presence of the forest.
When he opened his eyes again, he told me he wanted to share what he had received from the Earth herself.
I gently opened his circle, and while he remained seated in the same place, he told me in a few words:
“I felt the Earth. I felt her presence. I felt her Love. And you know what? She spoke to me. Me, who normally hears nothing—she spoke to me.”
His eyes began to fill with tears again. I could feel that they were tears of grace. He closed his eyes. I remained silent, attuned to the rhythm of his words and his silences. Then he continued.
“Before thinking about how Heaven can help us, before thinking about doing anything, there is something that comes first. The Earth told me that the first words are: ‘Love yourself, and Heaven will love you.’
“So I asked the Earth: How do I love myself? What am I supposed to love?
“She answered:
‘You are my child. Love me through yourself. Love welcoming my presence. Love welcoming my vibration. Love yourself as a child of the Earth.
You are not the one who works hard. You are a soul. Immortal. Eternal. You come from Heaven, and one day you will return there. Your troubles are stories, because you forget who you are. You are a being of light who came into this body. You are a presence—a presence that forgets its true nature.
‘So come back to me. I will remind you who you are, like a gentle and loving mother.
‘And like a son at peace in his mother’s arms, allow yourself to be loved. Let love spread through you—through your body, your thoughts, your energy, your consciousness. Let love unfold.
‘And then you will feel that this love is here. It is here in every moment. This love, this vibration, comes from Heaven. And from the Earth as well. This love reconnects you and opens the confined and separated spaces within you.’”
He began to cry again. I felt that his tears were carrying away beliefs along with them. Stories were flowing from his closed eyes. I waited patiently.
When he opened his eyes again, he looked at me differently. There was a new intensity in his gaze.
“Do you understand?” he said. “Love yourself, and Heaven will love you. Why didn’t I think of that before? Why did I get so caught up in my stories?”
I didn’t answer. He seemed to be speaking to himself. All I had to do was be there and listen. Or rather, simply be present, allowing the presence of the moment itself to listen with him to what was emerging.
“It seems so simple. So obvious. How did I not see it sooner?”
He buried his face in his hands and wept deeply once more, until his tears became only sobs, a few shudders passing through his body. Then he took his hands away from his face, wiped away the last tears still clinging to his eyes, and looked around him.
Silent.
I could feel a new strength emanating from him. A light. A peace filled with presence. And I could feel his heart radiating.
A luminous peace.
A radiant peace.
And in that suspended moment, I felt that through him, it was Heaven and the Earth themselves that were loving.
