- February 2017: A laboratory in Wuhan is on the cusp of being cleared to work with the world’s most dangerous pathogens. The move is part of a plan to build between five and seven biosafety level-4 (BSL-4) labs across the Chinese mainland by 2025, and has generated much excitement, as well as some concerns. Some scientists outside China worry about pathogens escaping, and the addition of a biological dimension to geopolitical tensions between China and other nations. But Chinese microbiologists are celebrating their entrance to the elite cadre empowered to wrestle with the world’s greatest biological threats.
- China announced it will close a section of the Great Wall and other famous Beijing landmarks to control the spread of a deadly virus.
- A massive explosion at a manufacturing plant has rattled homes in Houston, Texas with the blast echoing across the city, shattering windows and waking residents in the early hours of Friday morning. The explosion reportedly took place at a factory in the Gessner area of the city.
- Aleksei Burkov, a 29-year-old Russian hacker, on Thursday pleaded guilty to multiple criminal charges for running two illegal websites that helped cyber criminals commit more than $20 million in credit card fraud. The first website Burkov operated was an online marketplace for buying and selling stolen credit card and debit card numbers—called Cardplanet—which roughly hosted 150,000 payment card details between the years 2009 and 2013. Cardplanet marketplace offered stolen payment card details for anywhere between $2.50 and $10 a card, depending on the card type, country of origin, and the availability of card owner information.
- Members of the Purdue Pharma family engulfed in the opiod crisis have sold their $38million Upper East Side townhouse and moved to Europe. Mortimer Sackler, son of the late founder and a former board member of the OxyContin producer, and his wife Jacqueline have told friends they will be spending ‘the winter term’ at Gstaad, Switzerland. Sacklers’ Purdue Pharma is facing around 2,600 lawsuits implicating its OxyContin in drug users’ deaths.

- University of Queensland researchers are working round the clock as they race to develop a vaccine to stop people dying from the coronavirus. The Queensland team is one of three around the world asked to plant their foot on the accelerator and use new technologies to get a vaccine onto the market fast. If the Queensland team can replicate what they’ve done in labs with other viruses, including related influenza and ebola, it’s possible the world could have a shield against coronavirus within six months.
